In recent discussions concerning fast food, a controversial issue has involved trying to decide whether it is healthy or unhealthy. On the one hand, some believe that fast food cannot simply be labeled as “junk” food because in many cases it contains nutritious ingredients. For example, according to research summarized by university student Jay Johnson, the U.S. National Food and Nutrition Board analyzed a variety of fast foods and found that they all contain significant amounts of the protein recommended per day for a healthy adult. In addition, Johnson pointed out that fast food such as pizza can be ordered with mushrooms, onions, green peppers, and other vegetables that we were often ordered to finish up when we were kids. On the other hand, others disagree and think that fast food is a poor choice because it is processed with unnatural additives that affect your body in negative ways. For evidence supporting this point of view, Janice White, a dietary specialist, was quoted as saying that salt, sugar, fat, and chemicals added to fast food will do the following: “raise your blood pressure, increase the levels of bad (LDL cholesterol), weaken your immune system, and reduce the ability of your colon to function properly.” And I definitely want a properly-functioning colon!
However, my own viewpoint is that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions about the dangers of what we eat or avoid eating because I think the scientific nutritional evidence is still inconclusive. We can go crazy with anxiety as we hear about each new nutritional theory. Most people have forgotten that it took nearly 20 years before smoking was proven to cause various types of health problems such as lung cancer. I also believe that the ancient proverb “all things in moderation” makes a lot of sense. I don’t think it will hurt me to enjoy my favorite pizza, fries, or milkshake once or twice a week. Also there are still some problems nobody is sure about. For example, if we stop eating meat from fast food, is there a substitute protein available for vegetarians and vegans that will keep them healthy? I believe this issue will continue to be important in the future because there are a lot of food businesses who want our money and will try to cash in on our fears or hopes about what the best-tasting, healthiest choices might be.
